A small group of Old Paradians, their families and friends frequented the Yarra Glen racetrack at the weekend, in joining the Old Paradians’ Association for the running of the 2017 Jack Hirsch Memorial Yarra Valley Cup.
Dino Rebellato, his wife Sandra and their friend Mary-Anne were there at the Association’s adjoining mini-marquees, as was OPA committeeman Phil Carter and the family and friends of Association Secretary Mirella Busso-Lee.
Guests gathered in two private mini marquees hired by the Association on the lawn by the track at Yarra Glen – amongst them Dale McCann, Matt Ryan and David Witchell, part owners of High Church, which went around in the big one.
Sadly, Hard Call greeted the judge and High Church finished ninth. As Matt said afterwards: “It was a little firm under foot and I don’t think High Church liked the hard ground at all”.
“We were waiting for him to put the foot down, but there was nothing there,” Matt said.
The Old Paradians’ Association will almost certainly maintain a presence at Yarra Glen on Cup Day, in the hope that Old Paradians may see fit to spend precious time together in the idyllic north-east.
As Matt said: “The day has definitely got merit. The track’s not far from home, it’s family-friendly and it’s comfortable”.
