CYCLISTS COMPLETE SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY
The OPA’s Annual Bike Ride is done and dusted for 2017, with this year’s route having been extended to 40 kilometres and taking in each of Parade’s past and existing campuses.
Five cyclists completed the entire ride from the Preston campus to Bundoora via the Old Bluestone Pile and Parade Preparatory College checkpoints at East Melbourne and Alphington. Five more riders joined the peloton at Alphington and completed the 16-kilometre Darebin Creek ride to the Grevillea Pavilion on Parade Drive where John Abrahams (1982) turned the snags.
The cyclists completed stints along St George’s Road and later, The Boulevard and Darebin Creek Trail in reaching their ultimate destination.
For the record, the cyclists were OPA President Lewis Derrico (1974) and his friend Frank Arena, Dino Rebellato (1978), Peter Gilmartin (1968), Chris Henderson and Chris Shepherd (representing the Old Paradians’ Football Club), Paul Schofield (1991), Wayne Grogan (1983) and his sons Darcy (currently a Year 9 Parade student) and William, who commences at the College in Year 7 next year.
Wayne, who completed the ride last year, said that the Grogans represented Parade’s “past, present and future” in the event.
“My boys really enjoyed it and they got to chat with other past students. Everyone was quite friendly and accommodating, and we all beat the rain too,” he said.
“It was really good for my boys to get out there and mix with the older boys who share that common thread with Parade.”
This year’s ride was mapped out by Dino Rebellato to whom the old Paradians’ Association extends its thanks. Dino is hoping to establish an Old Paradians Cycling Team, and those interested in joining are urged to contact Tony.DeBolfo@parade.vic.edu.au
