Old Paradian immortalised on canvas
John Wegner, a 1967 Parade College final year student whose long and distinguished career as a Helden Baritone voice has thrilled audiences in opera houses both in Australia and internationally, has been immortalised on canvas by the artist Sally West.
Sally’s portrait of John - as Jokanaan In Opera Australia’s “Salome” which was performed at the Sydney Opera House - has also been selected as a finalist in the 2015 Portia Geach Art Prize for female artists at Sydney’s S.H. Ervin Gallery.
Clearly delighted with the outcome, John, now based in Sydney, explained that he sat for the portrait earlier in the year.
“I went to artist Sally West’s studio, put on a costume, applied makeup and wig and posed for a portrait as the intense character of Jokanaan in Salome,” John said.
“Sally filled the large 150cmx150cm canvas in only two hours - testimony to her amazing concentration and speed - but it took six months to dry.”
Now, ‘Enchained - First Sitting - John Wegner As Jokanaan In Opera Australia’s Salome’, has been chosen as a Finalist in the Portia Geach Award.
The painting will be on display from September 17 until October 25 at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, located at the end of Watson Road, Observatory Hill, The Rocks.
