Old Paradians Association Hall of Fame

In 2010, the Old Paradians Association committee, in its wisdom, saw fit to found an Old Paradians Hall of Fame. The committee’s rationale was that a Hall of Fame would help perpetuate the memory of the people who brought honour to Parade College and who by their contributions to society serve as authentic role models for present and future generations of the Parade community.

To assist with the process of induction, members of the committee sought the counsel of Parade College’s 1944 Head Prefect Bill Dunne, who, since commencing his schooling at Parade College East Melbourne just a few short months before the outbreak of the Second World War, has committed his boundless energeries to the cause of Parade College and the Old Paradians Association for more than 70 years.

Mouse over an OPs Name to view his details Louis Arthur 1905 - 1972 student, Parade College 1922 (final year) Brother Naughtin perhaps put it best in his tome The Parade Story when he wrote of Lou Arthur: “The name of Lou Arthur will occur frequently in this story, for he was at the heart of all activities supportive of Parade from the mid-twenties till his death in 1972. There are those who would rightly argue that Lou (as he was known to his intimates) never really became an Old Paradian. For he never really left Parade”. Lou Arthur served as the long-term secretary and President of the Old Paradians Association. In 1929 he founded the Old Paradians Amateur Football Club, serving as its inaugural secretary and, later, for two terms as President. A President of the Victorian Employers Federation, Lou was also President and secretary of the Victorian Road Transport Association. Sir Bernard Callinan AC, CBE, DSO, MC 1913 - 1995 student, Parade College (1927) final year An outstanding soldier through World War II, having Sir Bernard served in the Commandoes in Timor, and later commanded the 58/32 Australian Infantry Battalion. He was awarded the DSO and MC for outstanding leadership and gallantry. Sir Bernard held many positions in the commercial field, including director CSR Ltd, director British Petroleum Company of Australia Ltd, commissioner of ABC and SEC, deputy chancellor LaTrobe University and president Institute of Engineers Australia. From 1963 he served as Commissioner of the SEC Victoria. Sir Bernard joined the MCC committee in 1966 and served as president from 1980 to 1985. He fought to retain the VFL grand final at the MCG, and was a long-serving VAFA Patron-in-Chief. Vice Admiral Sir John Augustine Collins KBE, CB 1899 - 1989 student, Parade College 1912 (final year) Sir John Collins was a Royal Australian Navy officer who served in World War I and World War II, and who eventually rose to become a Vice Admiral and Chief of Staff of the RAN. Sir John was one of the first graduates of the Royal Australian Naval College to attain flag rank. During World War II, he commanded the cruiser HMAS Sydney in the Mediterranean campaign. He led the Australian Naval Squadron in the Pacific theatre and was wounded in the first recorded kamikaze attack, in 1944. Sir John was appointed Chief of Naval Staff in 1948 and held the position until 1955. He was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the 1951 New Year Honours. He later served as Australia’s High Commissioner to New Zealand (1956–1962). In 1965 the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies offered Sir John the governor-generalship, but he refused the honour. The latest class of Australian submarine, the Collins class bears his name. The Most Reverend Arthur Francis Fox, DD, VG 1904 - 1997 student, Parade College 1922 (final year) The Most Reverend Arthur Fox studied for the priesthood at Corpus Christi College, Werribee, and was among the first group of students to enter the seminary when it was established in 1923. He was ordained a priest by Archbishop Mannix at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne, in 1930. He was Vicar General of the archdiocese when in 1956, he was appointed an auxiliary bishop to Archbishop Mannix by Pope Pius XII. He was consecrated in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne in 1957 by Coadjutor Archbishop of Melbourne Justin Daniel Symonds. In 1967 he was appointed Bishop of Sale by Pope Paul VI and was enthroned at St Mary’s Cathedral the following year. In celebrating the golden jubilee of his ordination in 1981, with the many donations he received, he opened the Bishop Fox Golden Jubilee Bursary Fund for the education of priests for the Diocese of Sale. James Francis “Jock” McHale 1882- 1953 student, Parade College 1894 (final year) Durability was the cornerstone of “Jock” McHale’s reputation as a Collingwood footballer. He set a VFL record by playing 191 games consecutively between 1906 and 1917, a record not broken until 1943. He also served as captain-coach from 1912–1913 and as playing coach from 1914 through to the 1917 Grand Final. He was an integral part of the 1910 and ’17 Collingwood premiership teams. From 1918 through to 1949, Jock forged a reputation as the most successful coach in VFL/AFL history. In total, he coached in 714 League matches for 467 wins and 10 ties (a 66.1 per cent winning rate). This included a record 59 finals matches and 17 Grand Finals for eight premierships. In 1996 Jock was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and then was elevated to legend status in 2005. Today, Jock’s memory is perpetuated with the awarding of the Jock McHale Medal to the premiership-winning coach. Mr. Justice Sir Norman O’Bryan 1894-1968 student, Parade College 1910 (final year) A dux of Parade College, Sir Norman was admitted to the Bar in 1916, two months after enlisting in the AIF. Sir Norman served in France from April 1918 with the 3rd Army Brigade, Australian Field Artillery. He was promoted lieutenant in June, but wounded in September, and after spending some months in chambers at the Middle Temple, London, returned to Melbourne where his AIF appointment terminated on Christmas Day 1919. From 1920-’38 Sir Norman practiced at the Victorian Bar. He also officiated as a Lecturer in Law at the University of Melbourne. In 1937 Sir Norman became a KC and also Chairman of St. Vincent’s Hospital. He was appointed Judge and knighted in 1958.
