DOM ON SONG FOR LA VIE BROHEME

They say that art imitates life . . . and so it is for Dom Hennequin and his amigo Josh Gavin.

In a few days time, Dom and Josh take to centre stage at Prahran’s MC Showroom, in a show called La Vie Broheme - which in part chronicles their burgeoning friendship, but more broadly their return to the bright lights of community theatre (with a nice little twist).

“This kind of started when Josh did a show with me in 2013 called Spelling Bee with an amateur company,” said Dom over a latte at Everyday Coffee’s Collingwood café on manic Johnston Street.

“That was five years ago, so it’s been a while since Josh has been on stage, but we loved singing together so we thought ‘Let’s do a cabaret’ - which is usually just an excuse to get out there and sing the songs you want to sing.”

Those whose great fortune it was to be at The Athenaeum for the tour de force that was the OPA’s Encore21 will fondly recall the duets in which Dom, a final year Parade student of 2009, featured - the Company Way with Luke Bortginon (pictured) and Colours Of My Life with Luisa Tascone.

In the months since, La Vie Broheme has become a priority for Dom and Josh, in tandem with the show’s director and musical director “who have helped us figure out what’s funny and where it needs to go”.

“I’ve been to a lot of cabarets, a lot of bad cabarets, where there hasn’t been much of a story and they’ve either been too heavy, too self-indulgent or not funny enough,” Dom said.

“We’ve tried to avoid that in every way possible. We want it to be a very enjoyable night for people who don’t even know musical theatre, so we’ve weaved together songs from a bunch of different shows into a story which is hopefully a laugh a minute.”

According to the La Vie Broheme blurb, Dom and Josh “cover hot topics from finding love to fatherhood to fame, giving their take on songs from smash hit Broadway shows such as Frozen, Wicked and Dear Evan Hansen”.

La Vie Broheme plays at The MC Showroom, Level 1, 48 Clifton Street, Prahran, for two nights only – Sunday, November 11 and 18 – commencing 6.00pm (doors open at 5 30pm) – and all Old Paradians (and non-Old Paradians alike) are urged to lend Dom and Josh their support.
