OLD PARADIANS URGED TO BACK THE BIG SLEEP

On the evening of June 22, the two Secon Freight & Logistics execs will brave the elements with nothing more than a couple of sleeping bags and some cardboard to raise funds for Vinnies Victoria and facilitate awareness for the issue of homelessness.

Both Brendon and Steve are encouraging all Old Paradians to support the cause.

“Our fundraising goal is $15,000 and Steve and I hope that all OPs might be able to contribute,” Brendon said.

“The money raised will help fund Vinnies services such as crisis accommodation, domestic violence support and soup van services, and even small amounts can make a huge difference.”

The outcomes of financial support for Vinnies are as follows;

  • $50 provides a meal and educational resources for a disadvantaged child;
  • $100 provides essential medications for an elderly person;
  • $300 helps a family pay its power bill this winter;
  • $500 shelters a homeless person in one of the society’s accommodation services; and
  • $1,000 pays the rent for a family facing eviction from their home.

With the onset of winter, Brendon and Steve wants to help Vinnies Victoria support those trying to rebuild their lives – the thousands of homeless young, middle-aged and older people, many of whom are forced to leave home through domestic violence or ongoing physical abuse.

Brendon previously participated in the Vinnies Victoria sleepover two years ago “and I would have backed it up last year but I was in hospital at the time”.

When asked what he remembered of the 2015 sleepover, Brendon replied “You get no sleep at all”.

“What you do get is a little bit of an understanding of what homeless people go through . . . and to sleep out night after night would be horrendous,” he said.

In the spirit of generosity, Brendon and Steve have called on all Old Paradians to consider sponsoring the Secon Team and donating to help the community’s homeless.
