PARADE COLLEGE

The Old Paradians’ Association and the Parade College community were saddened by the passing of Old Paradian, Michael Pratt GC in the early hours of Saturday October 12. Michael was a recipient of the Association's highest honour, its Hall of Fame in 2011.

Michael was awarded one of the highest civilian bravery honours, after he tried to stop three armed bank robbers in Clifton Hill in 1976. He was an off-duty and unarmed police officer at the time. The former Victoria Police Officer was the last Australian to receive what at the time was Britain’s highest award for bravery.

The George Cross remains the highest decoration of the Australian honours system after the British Victoria Cross and the Victoria Cross for Australia.

The George Cross Award was a most important one to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in honour of her father, King George VI. Michael was able to make many trips where the Queen would honour Michael and Australian Victoria Cross awards. Even this year, with battling health, Michael was able to get to the UK and meet King Charles.

Michael was one of five boys schooled at Parade. His brothers included Peter (1978), Danny (1982), Mark (1984) and Matthew (1986).

The Association was able to speak of Michael and his battle with cancer just last week at the OPA RACV Lunch and at its Annual Hall of Fame Dinner. We were able to quote an extract from a letter Michael received recently from Chief Commissioner Mike Bush CNZM, which beautifully describes Michael.

“Over the years, your contribution to Victoria Police has set a lasting standard of courage, integrity, and leadership- particularly demonstrated by being awarded the George Cross for outstanding bravery. The impact you have made on your colleagues, the community, and the organisation cannot be overstated………”

Michael’s brother Danny reported that Commissioner Bush was able to visit Michael in hospital recently, which lifted his spirits greatly.

Michael’s funeral, with full Police honours, will take place at the Police Academy, Glen Waverley, Friday October 24 at 11.00am.
