PARADE COLLEGE

On Wednesday, 20 May, Parade College hosted the annual Bedford–Madden Shield First XVIII football match against St Bernard's College at Waterford Oval. Prior to the men’s match, Parade College’s inaugural women’s football team took to the field in a curtain-raiser match against St Columba's College.

The Bedford–Madden Shield remains a significant occasion on the College calendar, celebrating the proud footballing tradition shared by Parade College and St Bernard’s College. The event was further enhanced by the presence of VFL/AFL legends Peter Bedford and Simon Madden, who joined the College community for the day’s festivities.

Importantly, the occasion also provided an opportunity to recognise and honour the service of Parade College war veterans. The College remains committed to acknowledging the sacrifices and contributions of veterans and endeavours to schedule the fixture as close as possible to ANZAC Day, reflecting the significance this occasion holds for many Old Collegians and members of the wider College community.

The College was also delighted to welcome back members of the 1996 Herald Shield premiership team as they celebrated the 30-year anniversary of Parade College’s memorable premiership victory. It was wonderful to have former players and coaching staff from that historic team join the celebrations.

Joining the luncheon were Dr Michael Davies, Principal of St Bernard’s College, along with members of the St Bernard’s leadership team.

College Principal Mark Aiello welcomed guests to the event, while Honorary Old Paradian and long-serving former teacher John Joss conducted the Ode and presented John Nicholls with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition for his great support and assistance extended to the Parade Veteran Community over many years. Prior to lunch, Ellen Lock led those gathered in prayer before guests enjoyed a buffet style lunch.

Following lunch, Craig Caracella, captain of the 1996 Herald Shield premiership team and current College staff member, reflected on the remarkable season and shared memories of the team’s success.

Peter Bedford and Simon Madden then entertained attendees with stories from their own football and coaching careers before inviting the coaches and captains of both schools to the stage for an engaging discussion.

On the field, both matches were played in excellent spirit. Parade College’s women’s team recorded a 13-point victory, while the men’s First XVIII defeated a determined St Bernard’s College side by 23 points. The women’s coaches award was presented to Scarlett Fitzpatrick for her outstanding class and skill across the ground, while the Phonse Kyne Most Courageous Award was awarded to Harrison Leeder following an exceptional performance in the men’s match.

Following this year’s result, the overall Bedford–Madden Shield tally now stands at 9–7 in favour of St Bernard’s College. Parade College looks forward to travelling to Essendon next year in the hope of narrowing the margin even further.
